Apple 2008 Xserve Review
Today I received my Xserve and, as I said, I am going to do a review on it…. Ok first thing that you will notice on the machine is the lights, the lights are awesome they pretty much make the system… aesthetically anyway. The second thing you will notice is that it comes with some brackets and cables and what not.
Now, The weird looking port to covert it into vga is mini dvi to vga so that you can connect it to an external monitor and actually use it as a computer yes you actually can use it as a computer… you can even run windows on it and use it as your main pc or mac, which ever you choose.
Something which is worth mentioning is that the allen key that it comes with is to be used to remove that white plastic piece off the front of the xserve when you first unbox it And it is to be used to unlock it because if you don’t unlock it you cant use a mouse or keyboard so basically:
this is what it looks like default (Locked):

And this is what it looks like unlocked (it doesn’t have the orange light):

What the Xserve comes with:
- A DVD drive
- 3x Hot swappable drives and drive bays on the front
- 2x Firewire 800 Ports
- 3x USB ports
- 2x Ethernet ports
- 1x Mini dvi
- 16x Blue LED indication lights on the front
- 2x Hard drive indication lights on the front one green one blue.
To achieve this unlock so you can use you USB keyboard and mouse you have to get the allen key and twist it until the orange light turns off. I am not sure at all why they do this but that’s just how it comes so yeh… Anyway this is a great machine and I recommend this for anyone who likes Apple products or needs dedicated hosting, I might host my own website on my server im not too sure yet though.

Can you take a picture of the allen key out of the Xserve ???
If your going to host your website off it remember that it uses allot of bandwidth so it could cost you allot to do it and so you could end up paying more to host it off the server then you currently pay for your hosting site to host it for you.
But it looks like a great machine I think it was a smart purchase that you made :)
@Glen: Very true, And just for that reason I’m probably not going to host it myself I was actually thinking the same thing with all the bandwidth it would use, plus it would slow my internet down, so yeh. :D
What do you need the xServer for? Just curious :P
And type in google CoLocation, if your planning on hosting the site off it, you pay for your server to run in a datafarm :)
Awsum bro amazing machine
nice machine, but why spend all that money on a xserve if you dont know what todo with it ? a mac mini is more than enough for some home server stuff.
So what are you using it for ?
@kayoone: Thanks man, yeh well it runs all my very important files and plus I have remote access to them 24/7, sure you can do that with any mac but any Mac is not made to be left on 24/7 so thats why I went with the Xserve and I can use it for Time Machine as well.
If you do end up using it as a web server for your site could you let me know how to do it, thanks.
As a xbox lover I like your blog and will make some more comments after more reading.
Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case. Have you tried the ipad? you can get one free at FreshGiftCard.com
I am beginning to get extremely unhappy. I can not seem to find a very good shared web host for my websites. I am using ixwebhosting, however they are usually down every other day! Can someone assist me?
My ipod 1G is our essential iPod, Pda and alot more, and even has already been since I recieved it. It continues to work on the newest iPod system software, and any iphone app I will want it to operate. I’m using it to leave this comment right now. It’s safe to say it’s a much more compared with simply an “excellent hobbyist system” — it is an excellent iPod
