How To Bypass Palm Pre Activation

Hacks

Ok so you have  a Palm Pre that you bought outright with no plan and you plan to use it in another country well this post will help you bypass the Sprint activation. Oh and on a quick note I have put all my posts into the correct categories so if you click on reviews it will show all my reviews etc.

This post is really for people that know what there doing in terms of using either the Linux terminal or the Mac terminal and I would say this is probably one for the hardest “Hacks” I have posted o this site, keep in mind it looks easy but trust me its not lol.

Ok so this method is from the palm pre dev wiki and I take no credit for it, however I found their instructions to be a little wack so in this post I will try and re write them to make them a little easier to understand keep in mind I will be copying and pasting there steps but I will be rewriting them the best of my ability to make things more simple. Before you start, I recommend to everyone that you download Textwrangler as it is really the best text editor that is available for mac in my opinion. It can also make changes as an administrator which is great and its what we need for this.

  1. Download the WebOS image.
  2. Rename this file to .zip, and extract it.
  3. Untar resources\webOS\nova-cust-image-castle.rootfs.tar.gz.
  4. Check to see that /dev has files in it after untarring. If it does not, try untarring as root. To untar as root, run this command in the Mac OS X terminal or Linux for that matter ” sudo tar xvf ” then after xvf put the file you wish to untar for example “sudo tar xvf /Users/Yourname/example.tar “
  5. Open file \usr\palm\applications\com.palm.app.firstuse\app\controllers\app-assistant.js.
  6. Change the setUpFirstUse() function. (See right down the very bottom of the page ;)
  7. Apply the diff’s to the following 2 files:
  8. Edit /usr/lib/ipkg/info/com.palm.app.firstuse.md5sums and add the correct md5 of app-assistant.js, account-service.js, and firstuse-util.js.
  9. Edit /md5sums file and add the correct md5 of app-assistant.js, account-service.js, and firstuse-util.js, and /usr/lib/ipkg/info/com.palm.app.firstuse.md5sums. (These two steps are not necessary, but if you don’t do them, the flashing will fail. The phone should still reboot and work as normally though.) **To check a files md5 checksum just open terminal and put for example ” md5 /Desktop/example.txt “
  10. Pack the nova-cust-image-castle.rootfs folder into nova-cust-image-castle.rootfs.tar.gz (make sure that the tar’s root contains the root file system, and not a folder containing the root file system).
  11. Pack the webOS folder into webOS.tar. Make sure that the root of the .tar contains the files in webOS and not a folder containing the files in webOS. In better words make sure you tar the files…. not a folder containing the files I used GUI Tar for mac as you can drag your files and tar them then gz them.
  12. Remove JARKEY.RSA and JARKEY.SF from \META-INF. ** This is very important or the install of the custom firmware will not go past about 3% **
  13. Edit the MANIFEST.MF in \META-INF. Make sure the Manifest.MF file is not corrupt or your entire .jar image will be.
  14. Pack the .jar back up. You can use zip to do this. NOTE: If zipping it is resulting in an unusable jar file, make sure you have the JDK installed and use: ” jar cvMf flasher.jar * ” MAKE Sure you include the “*” or it wont work correctly…. Also make sure you have CD’d into your custom firmware folder before running that command for example to cd into a directory look here –> ” cd /Users/Yourname/Desktop/customsprintimage “
  15. Hold the volume up button while plugging in USB cable.
  16. Flash it by opening up the .jar file you just created.
  17. Once you get to the “Create Palm Profile” screen, tap the little phone icon down in the lower right notification area.
  18. Choose the “Enable WiFi” menu item.
  19. When the WiFi control opens, enable WiFi and connect to your local WiFi network (must allow internet accesss).
  20. Close the WiFi panel and then proceed normally to create your new Palm Profile. NOTE: If you find yourself unable to close the WiFi panel, remove the battery and reboot. Your phone will still connect to the network.

*** REMEMBER: If it gets stuck or it fails to restart your phone after 84% just remove the battery and it will boot there is not problem, however if it stops any earlier then you will have to re do this process ***

Change setup first use function to:
)
function setUpFirstUse () {
setupSimulator ();
isDevice = true;
}
Change
/usr/palm/applications/com.palm.app.firstuse/app/models/account-service.js to:

peefMode: function() {
return new Mojo.Service.Request("palm://com.palm.applicationManager/open", {
parameters: {
id: 'com.palm.app.wifi',
params: {
}
}
});
},

  16. For that past three months, I have been waiting for that DVD edition with the Frasier series. I am even now fourth in line at my local library to receive these so I was very excited to learn that I can Watch Frasier Online.. My plan was to watch the DVDs about the train while commuting to and from function so I’m hoping I’ve Internet access through the tunnels and stations on my route. My wife laughs about my obsession with this, but she is hooked on particular Tv shows herself. I’m wondering if I should tell her that she can watch her exhibits online also.

    Same request as above. Can you mail link to a modified WebOSDoctor which will enable Palm Profile Creation through WiFi? I’m in Pakistan and even though my UK O2 Palm Pre is unlocked (by obtaining MSL after paying for it), it does not create Palm Profile with local service providers APN & GPRS settings.
